Nottingham planning: New plans revealed for former Cold War nuclear bunker in Nottingham

The Nottingham War Rooms and the land around it could soon look very different

A former Cold War nuclear bunker in Nottingham could be transformed into an education and learning hub.

The land around the Nottingham War Rooms, in Chalfont Drive, Beechdale, could be turned into 104 affordable homes after planning documents were submitted by Hamilton Russell Homes.

The plans, which were received by Nottingham City Council on January 6, also involve the 1950s-era bunker being converted into a creative hub.

A planning document put together by architect CPMG said: “The project is aspirational in its nature and will help to raise perceptions of the site’s history.

“The brief for the project emphasises respect for the historic value of the building, quality of design and materials, and sustainability, with the aim of creating a focal amenity for the resident community and a multi-functional facility that will attract visitors and create jobs, thus providing a boost to the local economy.”

In the event of a nuclear war, the building would have been at the centre of the UK government’s response.

However, the command centre was never required and underwent decommissioning in the late 1960s.

The bunker has lain largely undisturbed ever since, with occasional tours of the building offered to the public, including in September last year.
