History enthusiasts are being given a rare chance to tour a former ‘top secret’ Cold War nuclear bunker in Nottingham.

Most recently known as the War Rooms, the large concrete building in Chalfont Drive, Beechdale, was built in the early 1950s.

In the event of a nuclear war, the building would have been at the centre of the UK government’s response.

However, the command centre was never required and underwent decommissioning in the late 1960s.

The building has lain largely undisturbed ever since, with various plans for redevelopment lodged over the years.

Now, history buffs have a rare opportunity to take a look around the former Cold War nerve centre with tours on September 17, 18 and 23.

The tours, run by Visit Nottinghamshire, will give visitors unprecedented access to the building.

Those on the tours will see the remains of a BBC studio with the original acoustic panelling, the tank room, an intact 1960s kitchen and dormitories.

Tickets are priced at £15 per person and can be purchased here
