Broxtowe Borough Council turned down the initial planning application which was submitted in May 2022. The student living, multi-use development which is marked for Beeston town centre on Station Road.

The Cassidy Group launched an appeal after the decision was made in July last year and it has now been overturned. The eight-storey building with a proposed 419 bedrooms will take over a derelict site, which is being used as a car park bringing a boost to the economy of Beeston. The height of the building would make it the tallest in Beeston and one of the first purpose-built student accommodation buildings.

The planning application was rejected due to concerns around parking, the massing of the building and questions about its sustainabilty. The developer has said they want to reassure the community that they want to create a building that will benefit the local area

Liam Brennan, of Cassidy Group, said: “We want to reassure the Beeston community that we are committed to creating a building which will benefit the local area a great deal – using sustainable materials and being sensitive to the town centre in terms of what is already there.

“As we have said before, our scheme will offer something fantastic for local students who are currently living in houses in multiple occupation (HMO) in Beeston and this can create problems for people trying to buy in the town.

“Our scheme will help free up homes for families to live in and encourage the use of public transport. Beeston has fantastic infrastructure, and the new development is designed to enhance that. We’re excited to see this site, which has sat derelict for so long, finally, be the home of something exciting for Beeston.”

Sam Liam added: “We are obviously pleased that our appeal has been heard and this overturned the council’s previous decision. The appeal recognised the benefits of our scheme to residents and the community – as well as students.

Beeston is a popular area for students as it is in close proximity to the Nottingham University Campus. It is also well connected to the city centre with trams, trains and has its own vibrant community of restaurants, bars and nightlife.

There is no purpose-built student accommodation currently which means that students often occupy family homes or flats in the town. It is hoped that this will free up homes in the town centre.
