When it comes to people from Nottingham who have gone on to great things, Sir Paul Smith is right up there with the very best. 

Sir Paul - who was born in Beeston in July 1946 - is arguably one of the most influential fashion designers in British history. 

These days the Paul Smith brand is sold in more than 60 countries around the world and employs over 1,200 people, but the designer’s story started right here in Nottingham. 

The 78-year-old opened his first shop in Nottingham’s Byard Lane in 1970, which sold established clothing labels alongside some of his own designs. 

In 2000, Sir Paul was knighted after nearly three decades as a menswear icon. 

Like so many Nottingham-born celebrities, Sir Paul has always stayed true to his local roots and even had one of the city’s trams named after him last month.
