While Nottingham has its share of coffee shops which are dotted across the city centre but there are a few independent venues that have a real ‘wow’ factor. Effy, a small cafe tucked away on Houndsgate is one of those instantly Instagrammable locations thanks to its beautiful decor.

While you may head for the ‘gram, you definately stay for the coffee as the cafe has a knack for picking up the perfect blend. This includes international options such as Manhattan’s Coffee Roasters from Rotterdam and Dak Coffee from Amsterdam. The friendly and knowledgable staff are also on hand to help with a suggestion or two if you are looking to try something new to break up your coffee order rut.

However it hasn’t been easy on Houndsgate as the surrouding areas have made trade not impossible, but difficult for traders. Will Baxter, supervisor at the Effy coffee shop, explained that a move to Hockley is on the cards although the Houndsgate location will remain open for now.

“One of the biggest things that we've been looking at is where we go from here. We've been here for four years and we could do with more space. We want to be in a new location to hit the reset button a bit as we are on a side street here which is fine in the city centre but this is a side street off a dying road,” Will said.

The street is situated in between a closed Nottingham Castle, a quiet Wheeler Gate and also, the ongoing construction work of Broadmarsh which has meant huge changes to Listergate.

“There isn’t much going on here as we don’t have the castle at the top and we don’t have Listergate as a lot of the shops down here have just collapsed. We want to be on a side street where people don’t have to seek us out, they can just walk in off the street.”

That said, there is a steady flow of customer traffic into Effy as Nottingham World visited. The cafe has emassed a bit of a following in the city. The loyal following of coffee fans, and those who come for the freshly baked on site goodies, will no doubt have no problems relocating once the new store opens. But for now, it’s business as usual for the cafe.

“We have been looking at new locations over in Hockley as it would be great to be around the likes of Jam Cafe and U Canteen. We’ve started designing but our designs are transferrable so if we dont get the store we have in mind then we can still apply it to where we are moving to,” Will said.

“The design will be different but have a smiluar personality that Effy has. Realistically, things can change so I would personally say we could we could be open dring the transition of summer and autumn. It’s hard to say when there are so many moving parts. We know its going to happen as of when, we can’t put a date on it.”
