Nottingham’s Ay-Up Market to go ahead in Old Market Square after attacks vigil
Sweet treats, handmade jewellery, vintage clothing and live music are just some of the independent businesses that will be on offer at this year’s Ay-Up Market.
Nottingham’s Ay-Up Market will go ahead as planned after three people were killed in a knife attack.
The event’s set-up in Old Market Square has been delayed, but will take place between 11am on Friday June 16 and 5pm on Sunday June 18.
University of Nottingham students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’malley-Kumar, both 19, and school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, died after suffering stab wounds in the early hours of Tuesday June 13. A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

In a joint statement, Nottingham City Council and Nottingham Business Improvement District said: “Our city has been rocked and devastated by Tuesday’s tragic events and our thoughts remain with the friends, families and colleagues of Barnaby, Grace and Ian.
“As has been seen by Thursday evening’s vigil, the Old Market Square is where we all go in Nottingham when there’s a need to grieve, celebrate or simply to be there to support one another.
“We stand with communities across the city in sadness and shock, and believe that holding the market is the right thing to do to reflect Nottingham’s diversity and spirit.
“As such, the market will go ahead as planned.”

The free event gives independant retailers and creatives, both physical and online, a unique trading platform that highlights what they bring to the city.
Curated by Pitch Presents, visitors can expect to see freshly baked goods, sweet treats, fine wine, vintage clothing, plants, skin care, arts, crafts, and handmade jewellery available from local independent retailers over the three days.
Some of the popular businesses taking part include Shop Zero, Slow Make Studio, Soul and Flare, Taste First, Treat Kitchen, Megan Crook Textiles, Sap Plants and Hallo Ceramics.
Alex Flint, CEO of It’s in Nottingham, said: “The market proved really popular last year and played an important role in bringing people into the city centre from miles around.
“People who visited also went on to explore the wider city which was a great boost for businesses.”
Alongside the market stalls, the event will also include a full programme of live music and family-friendly performances, arranged by local creative studio, Mimm & Phlexx Records, in collaboration with DHP Family.
