Nottingham’s Glee Club has announced they are relocating to a new venue after twelve years of being based on Canal Street. The club hopes to reopen later this year in a brand new, unannounced location.

The Glee Club shared on its website that the historic British Waterways Building in which it is housed will close on Wednesday, March 15. The new location will open in late 2023 with gigs advertised from Thursday, October 19 2023. Other venues in Nottingham have stepped up to accommodate the club’s remaining March and April gigs so that fans don’t miss out.

Comedian Zoe Lyons will now appear at The Canalhouse on Sunday, March 19 while Jayde Adams will perform at Nottingham Playhouse on Thursday, April 27.

It follows an announcement late last year that there are plans to convert the historic listed building into 95 flats while retaining some of the period features. The instantly recognisable building is situated off the Nottingham and Beeston Canal in Castle Wharf. The building was originally known as the Trent Navigation Company and it was built in 1919 to be used for the storage of goods before they were loaded onto canal barges.

The Glee Club team shared the news on Twitter saying they were ‘sad’ to be leaving their home. They wrote: WE'RE MOVING! After 12 yrs, our Notts venue is moving. Our last show in the British Waterways Building will be @ timkeyperson on Wed 15 Mar. We're so sad to be leaving the place we've called home for so long, but v excited to open in a new venue this winter.’

The Glee Club brand also has locations across the UK including Birmingham, Cardiff and Oxford. It is known for its comedy, burlesque and live acts especially for discovering up-and-coming artists. Highlights have included performances from Kiri Pritchard Mcclean and Nottingham’s own Matt Forde.

The Glee Club may be the last in the row to close its doors but it follows a series of closures to make way for the renovation. The Company Inn, a Wetherspoons pub closed in November 2021 along with a gym. Other pubs in the area remain such as Via Fossa and Canalhouse.
