Speaking candidly about her father’s passing she said: “It came as a complete shock to me and my family when my dad was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2017.

“He had gone to the doctor after noticing a lump in his throat when swallowing. While radiotherapy was successful in treating the tumour, cancer sadly returned and in early 2020 he underwent a 10-hour laryngectomy.

“The operation left him needing a stoma. In January 2023 we were devastated to learn that the cancer had returned for a third time, this time at the back of his neck.

“After investigation, it was found that the cancer had already caused part of his spine to crumble away and because of its location, surgery wasn’t an option. We were told there was nothing the doctors could do and he sadly passed away in May 2023.

“Last year I paid tribute to my father’s memory with a netball tournament which raised funds for much needed research into treatment – and I’m delighted to be bringing the event back for a second year.

“I play netball in a local social league and I am also involved with a new local club, Roses Netball Club as their Secretary. It made perfect sense to me to use those contacts and following the success of last year’s event,

“I am thrilled that so many teams have come forward to take part in the charity tournament’s second year. While Oracle Head & Neck Cancer UK’s fantastic work sadly won’t benefit my dad, it will hopefully help others in the future.”

The charity is pioneering several revolutionary research projects into head and neck cancers, including research into the lifecycle of HPV infections and the impact of radiotherapy on DNA and how drugs can influence the end result.

The charity also undertakes clinical trials. Oracle Head & Neck Cancer UK strives to raise awareness of head and neck cancers and how a monthly 60-second check could catch signs and symptoms early.

The charity is there for its patients from diagnosis to end of life.

Michelle Vickers, Chief Awareness Officer at Oracle Head & Neck Cancer UK, adds: “Last year’s charity tournament was incredible and we are so grateful to Nicki for choosing to support Oracle Head & Neck Cancer UK with the funds raised for a second time.
