The data found that almost a quarter of people in Nottingham report drinking between 15-50 alcohol units in one sitting over Christmas

Nottingham is home to the nation's biggest festive drinks, according to a recent survey.

The data collected by natural pre-drinking supplement Myrkl, calculated the number of residents who consume alcohol more than once per week over the Christmas period.

It found that almost a quarter (22.64%) of people in Nottingham report drinking between 15-50 alcohol units (or more) in a typical sitting over the festive period – which is well over the NHS recommended guidance of 14 units per week.

After digging further into the city’s Christmas drinking habits, the data found that Nottingham residents most like to wet their whistle with a glass of white wine over the festive period, with nearly a third (31.13%) voting it as their top Christmas beverage choice. This was closely followed by beer (19.81% each), and lager (20.75%).

But while residents from Nottingham admit to enjoying a Christmas ‘bevvy’ research has also revealed that alcohol fears are dampening some residents’ Christmas spirit.

According to the data, 13.68% of people from Nottingham are “feeling nervous” about the festive season due to the increase in social drinking, and 23.58% are worried about their health.

However, residents aren’t compromising on social activities as 66.67% said they wouldn’t turn down a Christmas party or event invitation to avoid unwanted after effects –  while only 16.24%  said that they are stocking up on non-alcoholic beverages.

  1. Nottingham (69% - with 9% drinking every day)
  2. Belfast (69% - with 7% drinking every day)
  3. Liverpool (66% - with 8% drinking alcohol every day)
  4. Sheffield (65% - with 8% drinking alcohol every day)
  5. Leeds (64% - with 7% drinking every day)

Least

  1. London (56% - with 7% drinking every day)
  2. Birmingham (55% - with 11% drinking every day)
  3. Southampton (55% - with 8% drinking every day)
  4. Bristol (54% - with 5% drinking every day)

Colin Chapman, alcohol expert and Global Head of Commercial Business at Myrkl, said: “Looking at our recent survey data, it’s clear that the festive season can be a jolly time for some, but an anxious time for others – and this is largely connected to the increase in social events and drinking culture.

"Staying in control can help you to enjoy everything the festive season has to offer, which is why we’ve created Myrkl – a unique natural food supplement, designed for responsible adults who want to enjoy socialising without having to compromise the next day. So, with Myrkl, Nottingham residents can enjoy a festive night out and still feel their best the next day!”
