Cod's Scallops: I tried Nottingham chippy's belly-busting deep-fried hot cross bun for Easter

Put it this way, I’ll never look at a hot cross bun the same way again

If you’re looking to go on a diet, it’s fair to say that Easter probably isn’t the best time to do so.

This time of year is heaven for chocoholics, with all kinds of sugary creations lining supermarket shelves.

When it comes to food at this time of year, we all have our preferences.

Some have no qualms about demolishing a whole Easter egg in just a few minutes, despite the inevitable nauseous consequences.

Others steer clear of chocolate eggs, instead opting for another seasonal favourite - the hot cross bun.

The perfect afternoon or late evening snack, the hot cross bun is a slightly healthier alternative to chocolate.

But that, of course, isn’t the case if they’re filled with Nutella and deep-fried.

Once we’d heard that a popular Nottingham chippy had started doing just that, I had to give one a try.

The Cod’s Scallops, which has restaurants in Carrington and Wollaton, launched the inventive new menu addition earlier this month.

I headed down to the Carrington restaurant to give one a try with, of course, a portion of chips.

The hot cross buns are priced at £2.50 or £5.50 with ice cream.

Not wishing to ruin my chips, I went for one without ice cream.

I cut my hot cross bun open to find a generous amount of hot Nutella.

As someone who prefers savoury over sweet, the combination of sweet chocolate and salty chips did taste a bit strange.

The crunchy batter complemented the sweet inside really well, boosted by the tasty Nutella.

Conscious of my daily calorie intake, I had a few bites and then called it a day.

As a novelty item, the deep-fried hot cross bun was unlike anything I’d ever eaten before.

However, I can’t say I’d rush back to have one if they were sold all year round.

But if you’re someone with a sweet tooth, why not head down to The Cod’s Scallops this Easter to give one a try.
