Today, Boots is celebrating 175 years of business, but did you know it started life here in Nottingham?

In the bustling streets of 19th-century Nottingham, a humble herbal medicine shop quietly opened its doors, destined to grow into a retail giant that would revolutionise the pharmaceutical landscape.

The journey of Boots the Chemist began in 1849, courtesy of the visionary John Boot, whose commitment to community health laid the foundation for an iconic brand.

According to Visit Nottingham: "The large iron and glass windows were extremely modern for the era and allowed passersby to get a glimpse of the Boots chemists in action."

After John died in 1860, his wife Mary and son Jesse Boot took the reins of his family's business and transformed it into a haven for health and well-being.

His dedication to providing affordable, quality medicines to the working-class population soon gained recognition. Nottingham, with its thriving lace industry and vibrant community, became the nurturing ground where Boots the Chemist would blossom.

As the Industrial Revolution swept through England, Boots embraced innovation, introducing new products and expanding its reach.

According to the Boots website: " A flagship department-style store was opened in Pelham Street, Nottingham.

"The impressive new shop showcased the varied array of products now available at Boots, from the dispensary, perfumery and stationery on the ground floor to the pictures, glass and fancy goods on the upstairs gallery.

"The exquisite interior design was heavily influenced by Jesse’s wife Florence. Impressed by the latest innovations, such as electric lighting, the store "took the public fancy amazingly". The Pelham Street shop became the model for future Boots stores."
