It was only a month ago that many of us were tucking into Christmas pudding or stollen cake, but Pancake Day is just around the corner. 

This year Pancake Day - formally known as Shrove Tuesday - falls on February 13.

Shrove Tuesday is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.

Why do we celebrate pancake day?

In Christian traditions, the 40 days before Easter are known as Lent, and they mark the time that Jesus spent fasting in the desert. 

Traditionally, Christians would mark the period with prayers and fasting, abstaining from a whole range of foods, including meat, eggs, fish, fats and milk.

With this in mind, all edible temptations had to be used up - hence the tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday!

Shrove Tuesday is now celebrated by millions of people across the UK, with all sorts of weird and wonderful pancake creations made to mark the occasion.
