On the whole, Nottingham is fairly flat. The city itself has been described as gently undulating, set among several 'low-lying hills'.

There are obvious exceptions to this (it's a bit of a climb up to the Castle for starters), and Carlton, Arnold, and Mapperely are home to some very steep inclines.

And then there's Freda Avenue (known locally as Death Hill).

Freda Avenue sometimes referred to as Freda's Grave, is a well-known steep hill located in Gedling.

It's one of the steepest residential streets in the county making it challenging for pedestrians and vehicles, particularly during adverse weather conditions.

It's been widely reported that some residents 'just don't leave their houses' when it is icy because they can't face battling the hill.

We can't even begin to imagine what it's like to learn to drive near here. Learners will have perfected the hill start within the first lesson!

The street is reportedly named after Freda Rumbold, who lived in a cottage at the top of the hill. She was renowned locally for her garden, which was beautifully maintained despite the steep terrain.

Freda's Grave is a nickname derived from the difficulty of walking up the hill, especially for those who are out of breath by the time they reach the top.
