Newcastle United face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League at the City Ground on Friday evening having loaned Chris Wood to the relegation-threatened club in January.

The Magpies also sold Jonjo Shelvey to Steve Cooper’s side in January, with the former Liverpool man signing a permanent deal.

Shelvey is free to feature against his former team having played in Forest’s last four games but Wood will not be eligible to face his parent club.

Wood’s move to the City Ground will be made permanent for a fee of £15m in the summer after he triggered the relevant clauses in his loan agreement.

However, that permanent switch will not be official until the season is over, meaning he is not available for selection on Friday.

The striker is facing a fitness battle after being withdrawn just six minutes into coming on during Forest’s 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

“Woody was just so unfortunate,” said Reds boss Steve Cooper. “He goes on, and in his first moment in the game he gets a really bad knock to his thigh which really swells up instantly like you wouldn’t believe.

“He tried to carry on with it, but it was just impossible. When he came to the halfway line and I saw it, I knew he wouldn’t be able to carry on, even though he tried. That was really unfortunate.”
