History buffs will love to visit Rufford Abbey in Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire is full of history. From the paths walked by Robin Hood to beautiful abandoned buildings.

One of the county’s most exquisite examples of a time gone by is Rufford Abbey a historic estate located two miles south of Ollerton (roughly a 40-minute drive from Nottingham city centre).

It has a rich history dating back to the 12th century when it was founded as a Cistercian abbey. Over the centuries, it underwent various changes in ownership and was eventually converted into a country house.

English Heritage says it is the best-preserved remains of a Cistercian abbey west cloister range in England.

Rufford Abbey was founded in 1146 by Gilbert de Gant, the Earl of Lincoln. It was established as a Cistercian monastery and remained so until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII in the 16th century.

After the Dissolution, the abbey and its lands were confiscated by the Crown. In the 16th century, it was granted to the Talbot family, who converted it into a country house. Over the years, the estate underwent various modifications and expansions.

The architecture of Rufford Abbey reflects its rich history. It features a mix of medieval, Tudor, and Victorian elements. The ruins of the original abbey still stand on the site, providing visitors with a glimpse into its past.

The abbey remains sit within Rufford Abbey Country Park, a vast estate comprising parkland, woodlands, and gardens. The grounds are open to the public and offer opportunities for leisurely walks, picnics, and wildlife spotting.

Today, Rufford Abbey is managed by English Heritage and is a popular visitor attraction. In addition to exploring the historic abbey ruins and grounds, visitors can enjoy various amenities such as a café, gift shop, and children's play area at the Country Park (not run by Historic England).

Throughout the year, it hosts a range of events and activities for visitors of all ages. These may include historical re-enactments, craft fairs, outdoor theatre performances, and seasonal celebrations.
