Petition launched to save Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station's ‘iconic’ cooling towers


A petition has been launched to save the cooling towers at Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station from demolition.
The iconic Nottinghamshire power station, located just off the A453, is set to close on September 30 after 57 years of energy production.

Hide AdThe decommissioning process for Ratcliffe, the UK’s last operational coal power station, will begin on October 1.

Once the two-year-long decommissioning process is complete, the power station and its cooling towers will be demolished.
The power station’s owner, Uniper, wants the site to become a zero-carbon technology and energy hub.
Despite this, some locals believe parts of the power station should be preserved for historical purposes.

The petition says that benefits of saving one of the cooling towers include the preservation of British history and out of respect to those who worked at the station.
Last week Ratcliffe received its final coal delivery, enough to generate power for approximately 500,000 homes over eight hours.
Opened in 1967, the electricity generated by Ratcliffe has produced enough energy to make more than 1 billion cups of tea per day and over 21 trillion overall.
