The iconic 80s band was met with hordes of screaming fans!

The way we listen to music has changed dramatically over the years.

From vinyl to CDs and then online streaming, the past 40 years have seen the music industry adapt to ever-changing mediums.

Back in the 1980s, vinyl was king. This meant that record chains, such as HMV and Virgin Records, were popping up all over the country.

The ‘80s is considered a golden era for music in the UK, with bands such as Wham!, Culture Club, and Simple Minds taking the country by storm.

It wouldn’t be fair to speak about iconic ‘80s bands without mentioning Depeche Mode.

With hits such as Enjoy the Silence and Just Can’t Get Enough, the group enjoyed phenomenal success throughout the ‘80s.

It’s fair to say that music lovers in Nottingham couldn’t believe their luck when Depeche Mode rocked up to open the city’s new HMV store in April 1986.

Hundreds queued along Lister Gate to catch a glimpse of the band, who took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a signing session.

We’ve had a look through the archives and dug out some retro pictures of Depeche Mode opening the new store in 1986.
