Train enthusiasts are eager to glimpse the Flying Scotsman's historic appearance at The Greatest Gathering in Derby, but arrival and departure times remain a mystery.

Train enthusiasts are scrambling to track down the arrival and departure times of the Flying Scotsman ahead of its much-anticipated appearance at The Greatest Gathering in Derby this weekend.

The world-famous steam locomotive will be part of the historic rail event at Alstom’s Litchurch Lane works from Friday 1 August to Sunday 3 August.

While organisers have confirmed the Scotsman’s presence, they’ve refused to release specific times for its movements in and out of the city due to fears of trespassing on the tracks and queues forming along the route – prompting fans online to piece together clues themselves.

Dozens of posts have appeared in railway Facebook groups and forums, with users comparing train schedules, historical patterns, and real-time tracker data to predict when the Scotsman will arrive in Derby.

Many believe the locomotive will roll into the city on Thursday ahead of a press preview that same afternoon, possibly straight from its previous visit to the Severn Valley Railway.

However, without official confirmation, the exact timing remains unknown. One enthusiast said: “Thursday, the loco going to collect it arrives at 10:18 from Toton so anytime after that.”

While others have said they think it will be Friday morning.

One detail that has been confirmed is the Scotsman’s role in hauling the Belmond British Pullman on Saturday August 2. The luxury train is due to depart Wellingborough in the morning and arrive at Derby, with the Scotsman expected to return to the Gathering site early that afternoon. This short excursion is currently the only movement publicly acknowledged by event organisers.

As for Sunday 3 August, rail fans suspect the Flying Scotsman will depart Derby sometime after the event ends at around 5pm, though no route or schedule has been published.

Many users online have pointed enthusiasts to the Real Time Trains website in their quest to track down the locomotive.

To manage the expected crowds, only 450 platform tickets will be issued per day at Derby Station between 30 July and 3 August, with enthusiasts being urged to plan ahead if they want a good view.

With organisers keeping quiet, fans are continuing to monitor live rail data and social media for updates, hoping to catch a glimpse of the iconic engine as it makes its way through Derbyshire.

For now, the Flying Scotsman’s schedule remains something of a mystery — but the hunt is very much on.
