Freezing weather means it’s officially fish and chip weather.
To be fair, a good chippy is amazing in all seasons, which is why we couldn't wait to check out one of the East Midlands newest restaurants, Darcy’s Fish & Chips.

Hide AdBased on Manor Road in Littleover, Darcy’s has been open for just a few weeks, having flung open its doors for a pre-Christmas launch on December 12, 2024.
The eatery doubles up as a restaurant with 120 covers, making it the largest chippy restaurant in the East Midlands.
For reference, Cod’s Scallops in Sherwood, Nottingham has 40 covers, which is one of the largest in the East Midlands.
Darcy’s also has a takeaway arm which can be accessed from the left side of the restaurant and for which there is a separate menu.

Hide AdWe dined at the restaurant and therefore our menu offered dishes such as appetisers of prawn cocktail and pitta with hummus, pies, burgers, desserts, coffee, cocktails and of course fish and chips.
I had small haddock and chips for £7.99.

The crisp fish batter was a joy to crack into, I wish the crunch factor continued around the whole fillet.
Chips were fresh and boasted a starchy, slightly creamy texture, they were enjoyed.

Hide AdThe curry sauce is not your traditional fish and chips accompaniment, so it did throw my tastebuds a little.
I could detect a hint of Chinese Five Spice, which I’m not sure belongs in curry sauce. This quirky spice addition may however be appreciated for diners looking for something a little bit different.
Tartare sauce is free, mushy peas, garden peas, curry sauce and gravy each cost £1.89.
Dining partner had steak and ale pie that arrived with chips and gravy.

The pie was hearty and filling.

Hide AdOverall the food was a solid offering and Darcy’s will no doubt be a great addition to Derby’s dining scene.
The restaurant itself felt spacious and I especially liked the floor-to-ceiling windows that let in bucket loads of light. I can imagine the window seats being particularly popular when it starts to get warmer.
It is however the customer service that sets it apart from other restaurants.
We were greeted within seconds of stepping through the door, no wasting time waiting to get someone’s attention.

Hide AdStaff also patrolled regularly throughout the restaurant and two waitstaff on the day were very chatty.
It felt nice and I won’t forget proper friendly vibes in a hurry (I’m a northerner, being friendly matters).
It is one of the best customer service experiences I have encountered in circa six months, and for this reason, I have no hesitation in highly recommending Darcy’s.
Assistant Manager Danny and the other cool waitstaff also asked us for feedback, which I think is important, as the eatery flexes its adaptability with a view to taking on board what customers really want.

Hide AdThe people behind Darcy’s have been in the restaurant business since 1986 and have big names of House Of Darwin and Honest Pizzas under their belt.
With people like Danny at the helm, pushing the friendly yet informative stance, and the good food offering, I envisage Darcy’s to become a fine establishment on Derby’s dining scene.
