Burns Night celebrations bring joy to Bingham care home residents
Residents at Fosse Way View gathered in the reception area to watch Pipe Major Billy James perform on the bagpipes and address the haggis in traditional style
HC-One’s Fosse Way View Care Home, in Bingham, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, celebrated Burns Night on Saturday, January 25, in true Scottish style with an outstanding performance from a major bagpiper.
Burns Night is a celebration of the life of the bard Robert Burns, his Scottish poetry, legacy and contribution to Scottish culture. Born in Ayrshire, Burns is not only regarded as Scotland’s most significant poet but also one of the world’s most influential, with iconic lines like “wee, sleeket, cowran, tim’rous beastie” from To a Mouse known by nearly every Scot.
Residents at Fosse Way View gathered in the reception area to watch Pipe Major Billy James perform on the bagpipes and address the haggis in traditional style. The haggis, prepared by the kitchen team, was escorted in by Billy.

Billy shared stories about Robert Burns and the origins of Burns Night, as well as his own journey to becoming the pipe major of a championship-winning pipe band. For 35 years, he has served as the family piper for the Duke and Duchess of Rutland at Belvoir Castle and performed for notable figures including William, Kate, Harry, as well as at each of Simon Cowell’s and Gareth Gates’ weddings respectively.
The performance was particularly cherished by the Scottish residents, Jean and Yvonne, who said it brought back fond memories of their heritage. Eleanor even enjoyed a private performance following the dinner of haggis, neeps, and tatties.
Jean, HC-One’s Fosse Way View resident, said:
“It was a marvellous day and how lucky we are to have such a well-travelled musician in our home.”
