Former Wilko staff to be given priority for new jobs

Several Nottinghamshire Wilko stores are set to be taken over by a high street discount competitor after the chain’s collapse into administration.

Wilko fell into administration last month after struggling with cash flow and stock shortages.

The family-owned company was founded in 1930 with its head office based in Worksop.

Now, Pepco Group, the parent company of Poundland, announced it has reached an agreement with administrators to buy three troubled stores in the county.

Among the 71 locations nationwide that are set to become new Poundland shops are the Wilko branches in Beeston, Kimberley and Worksop.

In a statement, Pepco Group said former Wilko staff would be given priority when applying for new jobs and that leases are expected to be signed in early Autumn.

Five Nottinghamshire branches of Wilko will close next week, administrators PricewaterhouseCoopers have confirmed.

Shops in Clifton, Kimberley and Sherwood will close on Tuesday, September 19, with Beeston and Carlton shutting on Thursday, September 21.

It is estimated around 2,000 jobs have been made redundant across Worksop, where the retailer’s distribution and head office are based, which has been likened to a pit closure.

Andy Bond, executive chairman of Pepco Group, said: “The agreement to take control of a number of Wilko store leases will help to bring Poundland’s fantastic prices and offer to even more customers in the UK.

“It will be pleasing to offer employment to a number of Wilko’s colleagues.”
